Birch Ridge Report: Summer still going strong

Posted: Thursday, July 01, 2004

I overheard a conversation one day about the seasons of Alaska that went something like this. "We have fall, winter, spring ... and July. And when the fireweed has blossomed all the way to the top of its stalk, summer's over."

Well, July is here and the blossoms are nowhere in sight, so grab your clubs and come enjoy summer at Birch Ridge Golf Course. Here's a rundown.

Saturday is the 13th annual Red Cross Tournament, with auction, barbecue and door prizes immediately following. Shotgun tee-off is at 8 a.m., after a 7 a.m. sign-in. Call the pro shop for details at 262-5270. All proceeds go to the American Red Cross.

The Birch Ridge Golf Course Pro-Am will be held July 12 with a start time of noon, followed by the Wells Fargo-sponsored barbecue and Alaska Pro Skins Game. Fees for Alaska pros are $100; for amateurs, $75.

Most of the professional golfers will be bringing their own teams, but a few will need players. Amateur golfers possessing a USGA handicap who would like to play need to call the pro shop for details.

A few factoids. This event began in 1996 when pro golfer Billy Casper came to Soldotna to fish. Casper was playing golf with Alaska pros George Archer, Joe Jiminez and Robert Landers. He agreed to show his golf skills at Birch Ridge with what began as the National Bank of Alaska Skins Game.

The event underwent a change in 2000 when the Alaska International Pro-Am was canceled. But NBA, now Wells Fargo Alaska, believed the opportunity for peninsula residents to watch great golf up close and personal, while at the same time promoting junior golf, was essential to our community.

For those of you who aren't playing, please come out and follow your favorites around the golf course. It's almost like Pebble.

Our senior golfers are still going strong on Monday mornings. Monday will be a holiday, so meet up with them (if you are old enough) on Tuesday for a play date.

Just a short list of July's events not previously mentioned: July 10 - Family Affair Tournament; July 15 - 6th annual Birch Ridge Golf Association Junior Golf Tournament; July 17 - 31st Anniversary Second Annual Par 3 Tourney; July 22 and 23 - Peninsula Senior Amateur Tournament. There will be more information available in future articles.

Just short of six more months before Christmas ... so I better see you on the back nine!
