Photo feature: Viking farewell

Posted: Sunday, July 02, 2000

Friends and family of Ernie Poole gather around a hand-made replica of a Viking boat containing his ashes and memorabilia during a remembrance on the beach in Kenai Friday evening. After a brief service, the boat was set adrift where archers ignited it with flaming arrows. Poole died in March following a brief battle with cancer. His wife, Patricia, said he often talked about wanting to be sent out to sea in a burning boat in Viking fashion after watching the movie "Rocket Gibralter" so she promised him she would honor his wishes.
