Oilers drop one, win one against Panners

Posted: Monday, July 02, 2001

After losing a game continued from Saturday night 4-3, the Peninsula Oilers rebounded with a 13-0 victory over the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks Sunday at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

Saturday, the Oilers and Panners battled through 13 innings and, with the game tied at 3-3, the game was suspended due to darkness at about 11 p.m.

The game was picked up Sunday, when the Panners were finally able to plate the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning. Eric Keefener scored the winning run on an error.

The Oilers big chance to win the game came in the 10th inning Saturday. Luke Simmons led off the inning with a single, then Justin Seely doubled to move Simmons to third.

After Trey Hendricks fouled out for the first out, Brian Horwitz walked to load the bases with one out. However, both Jefferson Thiel and Creighton Kahoalii flied out against Fairbanks starter Sean Timmons.

The Oilers immediately took out their frustration on the Panners in the next game, belting out 12 hits while limiting the Panners to five hits.

Horwitz had a two-RBI single in the top of the first as the Oilers jumped to a 3-0 lead before the Panners could even get to the plate.

That would turn out to be all the run support the Oilers would need. James Dayley got the start for Peninsula and pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. By the time Dayley left the game, the Oilers had a 13-0 lead.

Trey Hendricks finished up the shutout for the Oilers.

Horwitz, Jeff Dragicevich and Jackson Coleman all had big games at the plate for Peninsula. Horwitz was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Dragicevich was 3-for-4 with two runs and Coleman had a triple, a home run and five RBIs.

The Oilers will continue play with the Goldpanners today when they face them at 7 p.m. at Growden Memorial Park. The game can be heard on 1140 KSLD.

A box score from Sunday's second game will be available in Tuesday's Clarion.
