An American aircrew was almost killed on April 1 when an overly aggressive Chinese jet collided with a Navy reconnaissance flight over international waters. The government of China never apologized for the provocation.
Nor is it the only way that the Chinese are threatening the lives of American men and women in uniform.
U.S. and British air missions over the ''no-fly'' zones in Iraq have been reduced sharply this year, as Iraqi attempts to shoot down allied aircraft have intensified. The no-fly zones are enforced as a result of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, and continuing United Nations sanctions on Iraq.
''It seems like you see a gunner almost everywhere in the no-fly zone,'' said a Navy pilot stationed in an air base in Turkey.
