ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Scott Heyworth has dropped out as a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in order to endorse Republican Alaska Sen. Frank Murkowski's bid for governor.
Heyworth and Murkowski held a news conference at the main dock of the Port of Anchorage Tuesday morning to make the announcement.
Heyworth is the chief sponsor of a ballot initiative to create an authority that could build a natural gas pipeline from the North Slope to Valdez. He said he is endorsing Murkowski because the senator is open to all options for bringing natural gas to market.
Murkowski said he and Heyworth share the same dream of making a natural gas pipeline a reality.
Heyworth's withdrawal as a candidate leaves only one Democrat in the race for lieutenant governor. That's Anchorage businessman Ernie Hall, who switched from nonpartisan to Democrat in March.
