Burn permits suspended

The high danger of wildfires has once again prompted the Kenai area office of Alaska State Forestry to suspend the use of open burning permits until further notice.

The suspension went into effect Sunday. Local fire departments on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula from Nikiski to Homer also are suspending burning.

Soldotna chamber to discuss prescription drugs

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will meet today at noon at the Riverside House. The presentation will be about prescription narcotics for chronic pain. For more information, call the chamber at 262-9814.

Project Homesafe visits peninsula

The National Shooting Sports Foundation's Project Homesafe and its mobile classroom will be at Big Kmart in Kenai today from noon until 4 p.m., Safeway in Soldotna Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Fourth of July Parade in Seward Thursday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. and Ulmer Drug and Hardware in Homer Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Project Homesafe is a nationwide firearms safety education program that provides safety kits free of charge.

Kenai plans Fourth of July festivities

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce "Spirit of Alaska" Fourth of July Parade will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Vendor booths will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the greenstrip by the softball fields. Children's games will begin following the parade and there will be carriage rides from 1 to 3 p.m.

Scholarship available from legion auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Ninilchik Unit 18 will award one $500 continuing education scholarship. The scholarship is open to any veteran or a family member of a veteran who is a resident of the Kenai Peninsula and is continuing their education to further their work skills to enter or reenter the work force at a higher level. It is not intended for graduating high school seniors. Applications are due by Aug. 25. To request an application, contact Danielle Nolan, scholarship chair at P. O. Soroptimist International sells discount cards

Soroptimist International of the Twin Cities is selling discount cards that can be used at many Kenai Peninsula businesses. Each card is $10 and all money will be used to help fund the annual women's conference and other projects, including scholarships. Copies of Cheechako News sought

The Soldotna Historical Society is looking for copies of the Cheechako News published between January and April 1986. These editions are the only ones missing from the Soldotna Public Library's collection. For more information, call Katherine Parker at 262-4580.
