Longtime Kasilof resident, Lois A. Calvin died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at her home in Kasilof. She was 74.
A celebration of life and gathering will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Calvin Homestead.
Born Oct. 23, 1928, in Oxford, Neb., Mrs. Calvin graduated as valedictorian of her Kimball County High School class of 1946 and immediately received an emergency war teaching certificate. She then began teaching school in a one-teacher, one-room schoolhouse for grades one through 12 in Northeastern Colorado. For the next 12 years she taught school all winter and attended Greeley Teachers' College in Greeley, Colo., until receiving her teaching certificate in 1958.
Mrs. Calvin met and married George Calvin of Julesburg, Colo., in 1958 and traveled to Alaska on their honeymoon, fell in love with the state and stayed. The Calvins began their life in Alaska as residents of Anchorage, where Mrs. Calvin taught school at Lake Otis Elementary and the Nunaka Valley School until they purchased a homestead in Kasilof and moved there in 1962. She and her husband adopted their oldest daughter, Cathy in 1964 and their daughter, Rose, in 1965, while Mrs. Calvin was a first-grade teacher at Tustumena School in Kasilof.
The Calvins moved to Chugiak in 1966 so Mr. Calvin could take a job with the U.S. Postal Service in Anchorage and Mrs. Calvin could stay home and raise their daughters. In 1970, Mr. Calvin received a transfer to the newly opened Kenai Post Office and the family moved back to their homestead in Kasilof where Mrs. Calvin gave birth to their third daughter, Carolyn, in 1972. Mrs. Calvin worked as a substitute teacher until 1982.
She was an avid gardener and loved to watch all of the different species of waterfowl and birds that made the Calvins' homestead their summer home. She spent many evenings playing pinochle with her lifelong friends.
Mrs. Calvin is preceded in death by her sister, Marie Rasmussen.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, George Calvin of Kasilof; daughter and son in-law, Cathy and Marty Shearer of Soldotna; daughter, Rose Jackson of Kenai; daughter, Carolyn Calvin of Kasilof; brother and sister in-law, Richard and Patricia Rasmussen of Thornton, Colo.; grandchildren, Rosemarie Jackson and Shaid Wim-Jackson of Kenai, Jessica Calvin of Kasilof and Jacob and Katie Shearer of Soldotna; and many friends and grateful students.
