Trading Bay resident George Theodore Hayden died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at The Masonic Home in Plattsmouth, Neb. He was 85.

Services were held Friday, June 25, in Atkinson, Neb.

Mr. Hayden was born to Emmett Hayden and Louisa May (Shaw) Hayden on Feb. 19, 1919, in Meadow Grove, Neb. After his mother died when he was 4, he and his sister, Leona, were raised by their grandparents in Meadow Grove. In 1931, they moved to Huntington Park, Calif., to live with their father and stepmother, Julia.

Mr. Hayden became a shoemaker and opened a shop in Hollywood, Calif. In the spring of 1940, he sold his shop, hitchhiked and worked steerage on a freighter to Valdez. He was hired to drive a car to Fairbanks and went to work in the gold fields. He married Charlotte Huskie on Oct. 29, 1940. He ran a shoe shop at Fort Richardson during the war years. During this time, his two children, Buck and Sharon, were born.

In 1946, he sold the shoe shop and obtained permission from the Army to drive his family out over the military-controlled Alaska Highway. He documented the 25-day trip in a published road log. In 1947, the family purchased a remote salmon cannery operation in Trading Bay.

His wife, Charlotte, died in 1984. He suffered a stroke while staying with his granddaughter and her husband in Kenai, on his way back to Trading Bay, for another commercial fishing season.

Mr. Hayden was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Wells of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Buck, and his wife, Sharla, of Oceanside, Calif.; grandchildren and spouses, Cade Hayden of Plano, Texas, Lisa and Paul Turner of Kenai, Leona and Rob Strait of Colorado Springs, Jodie and Antonio Escot of Wasilla and Amber and Sean Green of San Diego; siblings, Leona Tolin, Alice Hinson and Robert Hayden, all of California; and great-grandchildren, Noelle and Hayden Strait.
