Posted: Monday, July 03, 2000

KENAI (AP) -- A second teen died from injuries following a collision involving a bicycle and a car on the Kenai Spur Highway early Friday morning.

Warren Staats, 16, of Nikiski, died late Saturday night at an Anchorage hospital. Robert Lawrence Borgen III, 15, of Nikiski, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Kenai police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed James Elwyn Anglebrandt, 26, of Kenai, was driving north on the highway at about 3 a.m. when he moved into the southbound lane to pass a vehicle, police said.

As Anglebrandt entered the southbound lane he struck a single bicycle being ridden by Borgen and Staats. The boys were traveling north in the southbound lane. The teens were not wearing bicycle helmets, police said.

Anglebrandt, who was not wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

No charges have been filed. The investigation was continuing, police said.
