Genealogy group holds public sessions in Kenai

Kenai Totem Tracers Genealogy Society offers a work-help session the second Saturday of each month in the conference room of the Kenai Community Library from 1 to 3 p.m. The next session will be held this Saturday. The society works to provide help and explain the library's genealogy resources.

The monthly meeting of the society is held the fourth Thursday of each month in the Kenai Community Library conference room from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The next meeting will be held July 28. It is open to the public.

Grade-schoolers invited to Summer Camp

Summer Camp 2000 is an educational program designed to stimulate children, grades kindergarten through sixth to help them explore and expand their talents and abilities. Summer Camp provides children with a wholesome learning environment, individual attention and instruction from a caring staff. Each three-week session features classes of high interest with a family day presentation on the last day of each session.

Offerings include cooking, sports, games and puzzles, performing arts and movement, computers and reading fun, fine arts and ceramics, foreign language and drama productions.

Session II of Summer Camp runs July 10-28. Tuition for 15 days, mornings only, is $160; 15 days, afternoons only, is $160; both morning and afternoon sessions are $275.

Challenger Center to launch: T-minus 5 days

The official launch ceremony for the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is Friday.

Visiting the event will be U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens and his wife, Catherine, family members of the 51-L Challenger Mission crew and other dignitaries in the dedication of Alaska's educational space center.

Outdoor launch festivities for the community will be at 2 p.m. The dedication ceremonies and the opening of space center will occur at 2:30 p.m.

Golf tournament slated

The Twin Cities Soroptimists Club, along with Preceptor Pi of Beta Sigma Pi, will present the fifth annual Chip Away Golf Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Kenai Golf Course.

The cost is $35, with greens fee, barbecue at 5:30 p.m. and prizes included.

All proceeds go to the Soroptimists' Cancer Fund administered through Central Peninsula General Hospital Patient Assistance Fund.

Library in need of volunteers

Friends of the Library is looking for volunteers to serve on the library board of trustees. Interested individuals may pick up applications or get more information at the Kenai Community Library. Deadline for applying is July 10.
