A second teen has died after being in critical condition at Providence Hospital in Anchorage following a vehicle-bicycle collision in Kenai early Friday morning.

Warren Staats, 16, of Nikiski, died at 11:28 p.m. Saturday after sustaining injuries stemming from the collision.

Robert Lawrence Borgen III, 15, of Nikiski, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Kenai police said.

Kenai police, Alaska State Troopers and Kenai Fire Depart-ment and Nikiski Fire Department paramedics responded to the accident near Mile 13.5 of the Kenai Spur Highway at 3:16 a.m.

Preliminary investigation revealed James Elwyn Anglebrandt, 26, of Kenai, was driving north on the Spur Highway in a 1990 Pontiac when he initiated a pass on a slower passenger vehicle, police said. As he entered the southbound lane to pass, Anglebrandt struck a single bicycle, traveling north in the southbound lane, being ridden by Borgen and Staats.

The teens were not wearing bicycle helmets.

Anglebrandt, who was not wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

No charges have been filed, but a police investigation is continuing.
