ANCHORAGE (AP) _ Searchers found the body of a hiker in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Monday, three days after the 34-year-old McCarthy man was reported overdue.
A helicopter crew with the Alaska Air National Guard found Travis Young's body shortly before noon. The body was discovered in a rocky chute at the 2,300-foot level of Williams Peak, 16 miles southwest of McCarthy.
Young was dropped off Wednesday at Dan Creek, a few miles from Williams Peak. According to the National Park Service, Young had left a trip plan outlining several possible routes, including 6,280-foot Williams Peak.
Park Service officials said Young's destination was the airfield at May Creek, about 10 miles southwest of McCarthy. Park officials said it's unclear when the accident occurred.
