Goldpanners beat Oilers on wild pitch

Posted: Tuesday, July 03, 2001

For the second straight day, the Peninsula Oilers lost to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks due to sloppy play in the final inning of the game.

Sunday, the Oilers lost a game continued over from Saturday when Eric Keefener of the Goldpanners scored on an error.

Monday at Growden Memorial Park, the winning run scored when Mike Mendez threw a wild pitch with runners on first and third and two outs.

The ball trickled away from Peninsula catcher Matt Cunningham, and by the time he located it the Goldpanners had a 2-1 Alaska Baseball League victory.

The game featured masterful pitching by Peninsula starter Nelson Lopez and Fairbanks starter Travis Soppe.

Lopez, who took the hard-luck loss, went 8 1-3 innings, giving up five hits and two runs -- one of which was earned. Soppe matched him all the way, going 7 1-3 innings and yielding one run on eight hits.

The Oilers were able to create opportunities on Soppe, leaving 11 runners on base. They just lacked the clutch hitting to cash in on the opportunities.

The one clutch at-bat on the evening came from Brian Horwitz. The Oilers were down 1-0 in the top of the eight inning when Horwitz launched a home run.

Will Bolt and Trey Hendricks each collected a pair of hits for the Oilers.

One of Peninsula's good opportunities came in the top of the third inning, when Hendricks was on third and Cunningham was on second with one out. However, Bolt flied out and Mark Teahen also flied out.

The Oilers also had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but Luke Simmons struck out swinging.

Peninsula will try and gain a split in the series when it resumes at 7 p.m. today. The game can be heard on 1140 KSLD.
