Eleven sign up for Yukon Quest

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Eleven mushers signed up Tuesday to run the 2003 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

Tuesday was the first day entries were accepted for the thousand-mile race between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The 2003 race will be the 20th edition.

First in line was Fairbanks musher Alden West, who camped outside the Yukon Quest office Monday night to beat all others to the entry line.

West will be a rookie. He ran the Quest 250 last year.

Two Rivers musher Abbie West, who is no relation to Alden West, was second in line.

Abbie West was followed by Rusty Hagan of Fairbanks, Terry Asbury of Healy, Bill Steyer of Fairbanks, Sylvia Furtwangler of Argenbuhl, Germany, Bruce Milne of Two Rivers, William Kleedehn of Carcross, Yukon Territory, Catherine Pinard of Whitehorse, Frank Turner of Whitehorse, and Peter Butteri of Tok.
