Poetry deadline Saturday

The Friendly Poets Society is offering a $1,000 grand prize in its latest poetry competition, free to everyone. There are 50 prizes in all worth almost $5,000. The contest is seeking poems on any subject, using any style, with a life-affirming inspirational theme.

The deadline is Saturday. A winners' list will be sent to all entrants. The editors reserve the right to publish the winning poems on-line or in a pamphlet.

Drama summer starts Monday

The Alaska Children's Institute for the Performing Arts, an area nonprofit organization, will hold its annual drama summer camp for children ages 8 through 14. It will be held at Nikiski High School from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through July 27.

The cost of the camp will be $99 per student, payable on the first day of the class. To participate, contact Joe Rizzo at 283-6109.

Writing conference planned

The Wrangell Mountains Center in McCarthy will present a writing workshop Aug. 11-18 with visiting writer Gretchen Legler. The workshop offers an intimate writing community in an inspirational setting and focuses on nonfiction writing and poetry.

The cost is $395, which includes meals and camping. There is a 10 percent discount for early enrollment. Lodging and university credit are available for additional costs. Enrollment is limited to 16 participants. For more information, call 248-1016 or e-mail spandika@ yahoo.com.
