Oilers fall to Bucs

Posted: Sunday, July 04, 2004

The Peninsula Oilers dropped a pair of games over the weekend in Anchorage to the Anchorage Bucs, losing 4-3 in 10 innings Friday and 6-4 Saturday.

On Saturday, the Oilers staged a furious ninth inning rally, but the Bucs were able to eke out a tight win at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Oilers scored three runs on five hits in the ninth to cut the lead to 6-4, but couldn't get the tying run across with the bases loaded.

The loss was the fourth of the season for the Oilers against the Bucs.

In Friday's game, the Oilers dropped to 0-3 on the year against the Bucs with a tough 10-inning loss. The game featured good pitching on both sides, as both teams managed just seven hits in the contest.

Pat Cassa got the start for the Oilers and gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings. When Cassa left the game, the score was 3-3.

Eric Butkiewicz came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Oilers to force the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Oilers closer Tim Robertson came on and immediately got into trouble.

The Bucs loaded the bases with nobody out. Robertson gave himself a chance of getting out of the jam by recording a fly ball out to second base, but then walked in the winning run.

The Oilers return home today for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against the Athletes in Action Fire of Fairbanks at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.
