Holiday events set

The following Fourth of July activities will be held in Kenai today: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. -- parade float check-in; 11 a.m. -- parade begins; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- Fun on the Green Strip with entertainment, food, crafts and activities for the kids. Take the shuttle from the Green Strip to the ConocoPhillips ice arena in Kenai to watch the Kenai River of Iron Pour. The shuttle will leave green strip about every 30 minutes.

Planned entertainment will be: 1 to 2 p.m. Southern Comfort; 2 to 2:45 p.m. Na Manu Olu dance troupe; 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Senior Line Dancers; 3:15 to 3:30 p.m Encore Dance Academy; 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. Larry Hull; and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Them Other Shuckers. Fish comedy continues

The Triumvirate Theatre continues with its annual fishing extravaganza show "Fish On" at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at the theatre at Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. The hour-long show will have fiddling, comedy and insider information. Two local performers will teach where the big fish are, how to catch them, the history of the river and how to stay safe while going after the fish of your dreams. Nikiski farmer's market seeks vendors

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will use its parking lot for a Wednesday Farmer's Market. Interested vendors may call, Leigh at 776-7654, Ext 1.

Library hosts boat raffle

Friends of the Soldotna Joyce Carver Library are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a fully equipped drift boat and trailer, plus other equipment and cash.

Tickets are $100. One thousand tickets are available and may be purchased at River and Sea Marine and Trustworthy Hardware and Fishing in Soldotna.

The drawing will be held at the community picnic during Soldotna Progress Days celebration slated for July 26 and 27. The proceeds will go toward the library expansion project.

Kids reading program continues

The Triumvirate Bookstore Frequent Reader Program continues. Kids can pick out one free book, a reading calendar and reading program rules at the bookstore in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. Bookstore hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Each time a reader returns their initialed calendar to the bookstore, they can pick out another free book and get their calendar punched. Scholarship available

Philanthropic Educational Organization International, Chapter M of Kenai is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a qualified female attending Kenai Peninsula College during the 2008-09 school year. Applications are available at the KPC financial aid office. Deadline for applications is July 15. The scholarship will be awarded by Aug. 1.
