Car seat check-ups set

Children of all ages need special care when riding in motor vehicles. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death and injury to children ages 0-15. Stop in at our event to have a child passenger safety technician check to make sure your child is riding safely in your vehicle.

O'Donnell, Cottam welcome a daughter

Krystal O'Donnell and Shayne Cottam of Kasilof announce the birth of their daughter, Zoey Addisen Cottam, at 2:02 p.m. Jan. 31, 2010, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. She weighed 7 pounds, 12.9 ounces and measured 19.5 inches.

She joins siblings, Kyler Ledet and Brogun Cottam.

Her grandparents are Anita and Pat O'Donnell of Great Falls, Mont. Her great-grandparents are Betty Smith-Tomlin and Lyody Tomlin, both of Waldport, Ore., and Maxine Shield of McMinnville, Ore.

Brotts have a son

Olga and Brian Brott of Kasilof announce the brith of their son, Mitchell Everett Brott at 7:53 a.m. April, 11, 2010 at Woman's Way Midwifery in Soldotna. She weighed 7 pounds and 3 ounces. She joins siblings Jay, Sasha Brott. Her grandparents are Janet Brott and Mihail and Ludmilla Mischenko.


Kennel club hosts events

* The Kenai Kennel Club will hold a Canine Good Citizen class at 6 p.m. July 16 at the club's facility in the Kenai Mall behind Sears on the Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai.

The class is six weeks for $60. A test will be held after the six weeks. The purpose of the test is to ensure the dog can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act mannerly in the home, public places and in the presence of other dogs.

The program is open to all dogs -- purebred and mixed breeds. The test is not a competition and does not require you and your dog to perform with precision.

The program is offered through the American Kennel Club and those who pass may request a certificate from AKC. For more information, call 335-2552 or 283-7515.

* The club also will host its annual agility trial and conformation show July 9 through 11 at Skyview High School.

Events begin at 8 a.m. each day and are generally finished by mid to late afternoon.

Spectators are encouraged to bring their own seating and be prepared for changing weather.

USDA food program offered

The Boys and Girls Club announce its participation in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program. Meals will be made available to enrolled children at no separate charge without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. For income eligibility requirements, call 283-2682.

Basketball camp planned

The Boys & Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula is taking registrations for 2010 Basketball Camp. These camps are for grades 3rd-6th. The Boys' camp runs from Aug. 2-6, and the cost is $75 if enrolled by July 16. The Girls' camp runs from August 9-13, and the cost is $75 if enrolled by July 23. The cost increases to $100 after the deadline. Register at the Kenai Rec Center. If you have any questions, please contact the Athletic Department at 283-3318.

Clothes give away set

Kenai Fellowship will host a clothing give a way at Mile 8.5 of Kenai Spur Highway on July 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Gayle at 335-2901 or Diane at 260-6194 for more information.

Steiner graduates

Kendra Yvonne Steiner graduated cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University on May 30, 2010, with a degree in communication with an emphasis in public relations and advertising, as well as a degree in religion. Steiner is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the official communication honor society of the National Communication Association.

While at PLU she was awarded the outstanding student 2010 for public relations and advertising and was the general manager for the universities media lab. She has been accepted into Lutheran Volunteer Corp. Steiner is the daughter of Bruce and Carrie Lee Steiner in Kenai.

Andrew joins Air Force

Air Force Airman Eian R. Andrew graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Sandra Andrew of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Errol Andrew of Kenai. Andrew is a 2009 graduate of Sedro Woolley High School.

Dohertys have a girl

Mandy and Tim Doherty of Kenai, announce the birth of their daughter, Alaira Jean Doherty, at 2:26 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. She weighed 6 pounds and 4.5 ounces and measured 19 inches. Her grandparents are Dan and Marla Gregory of Nikiski, and Brenda and Pat Evans of Clyde, Texas.


Donations sought

Nikiski Clubhouse/Boys & Girls Club is seeking gently used items for its fourth annual charity garage sale. All proceeds to benefit a local charity. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 6 p.m. at Nikiski North Star Elementary. The garage sale will be held July 7- 9 at Nikiski North Star Elementary Gym. Flynns have new addition

Amanda Rochelle and Reid Flynn of Nikiski announce the birth of their daughter Chevelle Rae Flynn at 8:26 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2010, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. She weighed 6 pounds and 14 ounces and measured 19 inches.

She joins sibling Jordyn Renae, 6. Her grandparents are Tom and Becky Flynn and Rich and Sarah Holliday, all of Nikiski, and Rick Cozad, of Rock Springs, Wyo.


Waggoner honored

Soldotna resident Margaret L. Waggoner was named as a student of excellence by the Untied States Achievement Academy.

Waggoner was nominated by her teacher Rene Taylor. Waggoner is a Skyview High School student and is the daughter of Rick Kernan of Mabton, Wash., and Shelia Waggoner of Soldotna. Her grandparents are Don Waggoner of Sunnyside, Wash., and Audrey Ware of Springfield, Ore.

Reading program continues

There is still time to join the summer reading program, "Make a Splash-READ!" at the Soldotna Public Library. Registration closes July 16 and programs end July 23. Program also includes a Message-in-a-Bottle Writing Contest for youth ages 7-18 and a coloring contest for children ages 3-6. These free programs are open to young people, preschool age through young adult and families.

Mills have a son

Cassie and Travis Mills of Robinson, Texas, announce the brith of their son, Ryker Wayne Mills at 11:11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, in Waco, Texas. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 20.25 inches. His grandparents are Karen Pulley, of Soldotna, Wayne Pulley, of Lewiston, Idaho, Iva Rabon, of Columbia, La., and Wayne Mills of Ottawa, Kan. His great-grandmother is Betty Curtis, of Kenai.

Ecks welcome a daughter

Tiffany and Brian Eck of Soldotna, announce the brith of their daughter, Chloe Elizabeth Eck, at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Central Peninsula Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds and 4 ounces and measured 19 inches. She joins Hayden Marie Eck, 3. Her grandparents are Richard and Linda Eck of Tyler, Texas, and Jesse and Cindy Stalnaker of Olympia, Wash. Her great-grandparents are Ruth Hastings of Soldotna, Mary Louise Eck of Kearny, Ariz., and Ellis and Sue Craig of San Manuel, Ariz.

Seggerman graduates

Soldotna resident Emma L. Seggerman graduated from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business on May 14, 2010. She earned a bachelor of Science degree in business and marketing.

Seggerman is 2004 graduate of Soldotna High School and the daughter of Tom and Sue Seggerman of Sterling and Sanne Berrig of Santa Monica, Calif.
