Twins split double dip

The American Legion Post 20 Twins earned a split Monday in their doubleheader against the Wenatchee, Wash., Packers at the Soldotna Little League Fields.

The Twins prevailed in game one 8-4 behind the pitching of Severin Gardner, but the Packers rallied to win a wild game two by a run, 10-9, thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

"It was a good ballgame -- close all the way," said Twins manager Lance Coz of the Post 20 effort.

The Twins scored three runs in the bottom of the second with Nick Christensen and Eric Newby hitting RBI doubles.

The Packers took a one-run lead in the top of the third inning with a grand slam, but the Twins put up a pair of homers -- a solo shot by Gardner and a three-run dinger by Joey Newby -- to reclaim their lead.

Gardner retired the Packers in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and left a runner stranded at third in the seventh by getting the final batter of the game to strike out.

The Twins and Packers slugged it out in the second game, with the Post 20 barrage highlighted by home runs from Shaun Williams and Mike Sauer.

The Packers took a 10-8 lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of doubles and a single.

Post 20 got one of those runs back when Aaron Hughes scored in the bottom of the seventh, but the Twins couldn't rally for another run to tie the game.
