Teen-age boy drowns at Fort Richardson

Posted: Thursday, July 05, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 17-year-old boy drowned early Wednesday in a Fort Richardson lake.

Anchorage police said Cameron Small was camping with other friends near Clooney Lake.

Shortly after midnight, Small tried to swim out to two young women on a raft. He disappeared below the surface and the other teen-agers were unable to find him.

Three soldiers camping nearby joined in the search. They had a boat and motor and eventually found the boy.

The soldiers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy until an ambulance from Elmendorf arrived.

Small was pronounced dead at Elmendorf Air Force Base Hospital shortly after 3 a.m.
