Johnson punches out 13 in Diamondbacks victory

HOUSTON -- Randy Johnson struck out 13 batters in the first five innings, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Houston Astros 3-2 Wednesday.

CINCINNATI -- Brian Giles homered twice after his selection for the All-Star game, and Pittsburgh escaped the NL Central cellar after spending 81 days in last place.

Mets 2, Cubs 1

NEW YORK -- Glendon Rusch (4-5) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings and added an RBI to get his first win since beating Montreal on May 21.

Expos 9, Marlins 6

MONTREAL -- Vladimir Guerrero reached 20 homers for the fourth straight season, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Montreal over Florida.

Cardinals 7, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Emergency starter Mike Matthews gave up three hits in 6 2-3 innings, and St. Louis ended Ben Sheets' personal six-game winning streak.

Padres 8, Rockies 3

SAN DIEGO -- Sterling Hitchcock pitched seven strong innings in his first start in more than a year, and Bubba Trammell hit his first career grand slam as San Diego beat Colorado.

Phillies 4, Braves 1

ATLANTA -- Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer, and David Coggin held Atlanta to three hits over seven innings as the Philadelphia Phillies increased their NL East-lead to two games over the Braves.

Dodgers 4, Giants 3

LOS ANGELES -- Gary Sheffield hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning as Los Angeles won its ninth straight.
