ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An Anchorage man was shot in the foot at a holiday picnic Thursday evening, according to Anchorage police.
Vaituu Motuga, 32, was taken to Alaska Regional Hospital with a bullet lodged in his right foot. The wound didn't appear to be life-threatening, police said.
The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at Mountain View park, where dozens of people were gathered for a Fourth of July barbecue.
Two groups of teen-age boys began fighting near the basketball courts in the park, and Motuga was one of several adults who tried to break up the fight. But one of the boys pulled out a pistol and started firing into the air.
Motuga and some other adults chased the boy to a nearby convenience store. There, he turned and fired at least five times in the direction of the pursuing adults, according to police.
Motuga was hit in the foot. The other adults stopped the chase to help the wounded man.
The incident is being investigated and police said they hoped to make an arrest.
