Sleeping driver hits Anchorage patrol car

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A sleeping driver crashed into a parked police car and destroyed it Thursday morning, Anchorage police said.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

According to police, officer Daniel Sturkie had pulled over a speeder on the Glenn Highway at about 5:45 a.m. Sturkie got out of his patrol car and was walking towards the car he had pulled over when a van plowed into the rear of the patrol car.

Police said the driver of the van had fallen asleep as he was driving.

Sturkie, who has been with the department since November 1994, got minor cuts from flying debris but was not hospitalized.

The van driver was not injured. Police did not release his name but said he was ticketed for careless driving.

The patrol car was totaled.
