Emergency order extends gillnetting hours

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries Thursday, issued an emergency order extending commercial salmon set gillnetting in the Kasilof section of the Upper Cook Inlet until 7 p.m. today. Drift gillnetting in the Kasilof section is open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"The escapement rate of sockeye salmon into the Kasilof River is proceeding at a rate greater than that needed to assure desired escapement levels," said Jeff Fox, area management biologist in issuing the emergency order.

Red Cross to sponsor golf classic

The American Red Cross 2002 Golf Classic will be Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. The contest will include 18 holes of golf, four-person scramble teams, an early bird drawing for $100, prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin shots, breakfast and refreshments. Cheerleaders to hold fund-raiser

Willow expert to lead Alaska fauna hike

The Kenai Watershed Forum will offer a one-day training course to become an Alaska flora expert Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Area willow expert Dominique Collete will guide participants through a general flora mountain walk through the Cooper Lake area at the end of Snug Harbor Road. The class will meet in the parking lot at the trail head of the Russian Trail. Bring a bag lunch and don't forget to bring plant guides. All programs are free and open to the public. Kenai Eagles to host dinner

Kenai Eagles Aerie No. 3525 will have a chicken cordon bleu dinner Saturday. Cost for the dinner is $7.50 for adults and $5 for children under age 10. The meal will be served from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

KKC plans dog show, trials

The Kenai Kennel Club will host a dog show, agility trial and obedience trial July 12 through 14 at Skyview High School. The events will start at 9 a.m. each day. Appointments can now be made for the August visit of the Alaska Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals' low-cost spay and neuter clinic.
