Gucker joins Army

Army Reserve Pfc. Christopher J. Gucker has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training Gucker studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills.

He is the son of Dennis and Anna LaRoche of Sterling and a 2004 graduate of the Alaska Military Youth Academy in Anchorage.

Matson makes dean's list

Former Ninilchik resident Amanda Matson was named to the deans list at Eastern Oregon University. To be named to the list a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

A 'Ward'ed

Rocky Ward of Kenai was awarded an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps college scholarship offer to attend an elected college.

He was selected to receive the scholarship certificate on the basis of tests, high school scholastic achievement, and extra-curricular activities. The majority of Air Force ROTC scholarships cover full college or university tuition, provide textbook allowance, and pays most laboratory or incidental fees.

Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program, he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

He is the son of Walter T. and Colleen Ward.
