Oilers finish trip with loss

Posted: Friday, July 06, 2001

The Peninsula Oilers finished off their eight-game road trip with a 6-5, 10-inning loss to the Alaska Goldpanners at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks Tuesday.

The Oilers, now 8-9 in Alaska Baseball League play, went 3-5 on their swing through Anchorage and on to Fairbanks, including three extra-innings losses. The Oilers are now 14-11 overall and are 2 1-2 games out of first in the ABL.

The Oilers will have the weekend off from ABL competition as Team USA will be in town for three games at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

The first game of the series is slated for Saturday with a 7 p.m. starting time. The Oilers and Team USA will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at 2 p.m.

After giving up one run in the first inning to the Goldpanners in Tuesday's game, the Oilers put three runs on the board in the top of the second inning.

The Oilers loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Luke Simmons, Brian Horwitz and Jefferson Thiel, and plated their first run on a single by Jackson Coleman.

Jeff Dragicevich drew a walk to force in another run, and Will Bolt's fielder's choice plated the third Oilers run of the inning.

The Oilers padded their lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Mark Teahen led off the fifth inning with a single, advanced on a base hit by Trey Hendricks and scored on a single by Simmons.

Jackson Coleman walked to lead off the sixth and scored on a triple by Dragicevich.

The Goldpanners made up the deficit with two swings in the bottom of the eighth. Casey Long hut a three-run homer and Todd Leathers followed with a solo shot to tie up the game.

The Goldpanners pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the 10th inning. Long drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a wild pitch and a ground out and beat the throw to the plate on a ground ball by Marc Tugwell.

Cordell Perkins pitched seven strong innings for the Oilers, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out four.

Nic Puckett came on in relief, allowing three runs on one hit and Hendricks gave up one run before Mike Mendez came on to get three outs to end the Goldpanners rally.

Mendez was charged with the loss, though, after giving up one run in 2 1-3 innings of work.
