Twins fail to defend Wasilla tourney title

Posted: Sunday, July 06, 2003

The American Legion Twins finished 1-2 in the round-robin portion of the four-team Wasilla Fourth of July Tournament Friday and Saturday.

That record means the Twins, the defending champions of the tournament, will play in the consolation game today. As of late Saturday, the Twins opponent in that game had not been determined.

The Twins (7-13 overall) got their only win of the tournament Saturday against Service. Nick Weigle pitched the first five innings for the Twins, and left with a 4-1 lead.

However, Service came back to tie the game with three runs off reliever Kenneth Butler in the sixth inning.

Post 20 then won the game for Butler in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Brett Toering singled in Robby Rounsaville for the game-winning run.

That play capped a stellar offensive game for Rounsaville. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and a home run.

The win against Service allowed the Twins to rebound from a bad performance against Wasilla earlier Saturday. The Road Warriors defeated the Twins 12-2, with the Twins committing nine errors.

Friday, in the first game of the tournament, Fairbanks dominated offensively, collecting 16 hits. Corey Grimm took the loss for the Twins.

"He wasn't hitting his spots," Coz said. "In our league, hitters are good enough that if you don't hit your spots, and leave the ball up, they hit it.

"That set the tone for the game."

Thursday, the Twins played Fairbanks in the second game of a doubleheader. The game had been scheduled for Wednesday, but had been rained out. Erich Simpson carried a no-hitter through five innings for the Twins, and ended up going the full seven innings for the victory.
