Soldotna swimmer sets state record

Area swimmer Olivia Bowen broke the Alaska state 50-meter short course butterfly record for 11- to 12-year-old girls on June 5. Her time was 32.46 seconds, eclipsing the old record of 33.69 seconds set in April 1994. Bowen swims for the Soldotna Silver Salmon Swim Club. She also is the 2005 Alaska Junior Olympic champion in the 50-yard butterfly.

The Soldotna Silver Salmon Swim Club is a nonprofit swim club serving the central Kenai Peninsula. The mission of the club is to provide an opportunity for the community's youth to participate in swimming. Currently, the club swims Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Soldotna High School pool. For more information, contact coach Sohail Marey at 262-7419 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
