Twins make championship game in Wasilla

Posted: Sunday, July 07, 2002

The American Legion Post 20 Peninsula Twins advanced to the championship game of the Todd Ryan Fourth of July Tournament by posting a 2-1 record Friday and Saturday.

The Twins, now 17-15 overall, will face off in the championship game today at 4 p.m. at the Bumpus Complex just outside of Wasilla. As the Clarion went to press, Post 20's opponent in the championship game had not yet been determined.

Post 20 started off the tournament with a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Mets of Belmar Friday, but rebounded for a 12-4 victory over the Wasilla Road Warriors Saturday morning and a 9-1 victory over Service Saturday afternoon.

The Twins handed the Cougars their third loss in Alaska play this season.

"We're feeling pretty good right now, especially with that win over Service," Twins manager Lance Coz said. "They just came back from a tournament Outside, so it's always nice to beat a team like that."

The Twins advanced to the championship game due to a tiebreaker that rewards the team that allows the fewest runs throughout the tournament.

"We're still mixing and matching our pitching, but it's working," Coz said.

Friday, Will Ridgeway and Ely Evanson held New Jersey to three runs, but the Twins offense sputtered by leaving 12 runners on base.

Saturday morning, the Twins got off to a slow start, but scored six runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game.

David Newby provided the big blow in the game with a grand slam home run. Evanson and Geno Vick handled the pitching duties in that game.

In the game against Service, the Twins got to Service ace Chuck Rider for eight runs in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Post 20's Corey Grimm held Service to one run over seven innings.
