The weather cleared, the golf was good, a little bit of cash changed hands and a few golfers even went home without getting any spaghetti sauce on their shirts at the inaugural Butch Anderson Senior Open Saturday and Sunday at the Kenai Golf Course.
"Everybody seemed to have a lot of fun," said tournament organizer Gordon Griffin. "Everything went back to the golfers there weren't any charities involved. It was just in honor of a beloved friend that died last year."
"It was great. It was fantastic," said Bob Bush after winning the net scoring title in the two-day, 36-hole handicapped event. "I played with a bunch of good guys, and there was a lot of laughing."
Bush said the golf was competitive, but not so intense that the participants couldn't enjoy two nice days on the golf course.
Bush's net score of 140 beat Robert Drewes and Mike Koskinas by four strokes while Gene Granath and Charlie Kahakauwila each finished with net scores of 145.
Drewes was awarded third and Koskinas second on tie-breaks.
Billy Applewhite won the gross scoring title, shooting 159 for the tournament. Doug Jung was second in gross scoring with 161 and Ken Liedes was third at 166.
Griffin said tournament planning began this past winter.
"We didn't have a senior tournament here, but we always wanted to have one," Griffin said. "After Butch passed away, we felt it was a perfect time to start one in his honor.
"(36 competitors) is a pretty good turnout for Fourth of July weekend. We're pleased. Everybody had a good time, and it was very competitive."
Griffin said there are plans to expand the tournament next summer to include junior seniors, golfers between the ages of 45 and 49.
Bush said he enjoys the challenge of individual play he frequently travels to Anchorage to play senior tournaments there and added that Kenai Golf Course's first senior tournament definitely has the potential to grow.
"I think it's going to evolve into a really good tournament."
