Pop Warner still accepting registration

Pop Warner late registration is in progress. Teams are filling up quickly, and practices begin Aug. 2. To register, visit or call Wendi at 260-3989 or Elizabeth at 262-5095.

Airport commission meeting canceled

The Kenai Airport Commission meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. For more information, call the city clerk's office at 283-7535, ext. 231.

Ninilchik center offers square dancing

Square dancing is available at the Ninilchik Senior Citizens Center, 66265 Aspen Ave., near the post office, at 7 p.m. Thursdays. A caller-instructor will be on hand, and dress is casual. For more information, call (907) 567-1004 or 252-6420.

Friends' book sale planned

Friends of the Kenai Community Library will hold its annual book sale Thursday through Saturday at the library. The presale for members will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and doors will open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

To help with the sale, call Megan O'Neill at 283-8462. To donate books, drop them off at the library anytime before Thursday afternoon.

Memorial ceremony, game, barbecue set

A dedication ceremony honoring Steve Shearer will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Kenai Softball Field Complex, followed by a commemorative softball game and barbecue. Shearer was an early founder and organizer of the men's softball league and volunteered his time to the organization's growth.

A memorial sign has been erected next to the fields, and anyone who wants to contribute to its cost can make a donation to the Steve Shearer Memorial account at the Kenai branch of Wells Fargo Bank.

Anyone interested in playing in Friday's commemorative softball game should call Steve Dexheimer at 262-2617.

Seniors plan bazaar, classic

The Sterling Senior Center will host its Christmas in July Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Saturday. Tables are available for $25, and there will be a bake sale and lots of crafts available for purchase. For more information, call 262-6808.

The center also is sponsoring its annual Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Count Classic, in which entrants guess the number of sockeye salmon that will cross the Alaska Department of Fish and Game counter as of noon Aug. 7. Tickets are $2, and prizes will be awarded for the three closest guesses. The deadline for entry is July 30, and winners will be announced Aug. 28.

Farmers' market open Saturdays

The central Kenai Peninsula Farmers' Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through September. The market is held at the bus turnaround next to Soldotna Elementary School on the Kenai Spur Highway. Fresh vegetables, herbs, plants arts and crafts are available for sale. New venders are welcome.
