Writers' group to meet

The Central Peninsula Writers' Group will met at the Kenai Community Library at 6 p.m. today. Anyone wishing to share their work should bring at least one hard copy besides the one they will read.

Stained glass workshop offered

Danny Shannon and Morning Star Studio in Homer will teach stained glass methods from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and July 16, 23 and 30. Participants will create three 1-foot-by-1-foot pieces while learning intermediate-level stained glass skills. The class costs $180. Supply costs are additional. Poetry workshops slated

Youth and adult poetry workshops with Molly Lou Freeman will be offered in Homer in July. The youth workshop is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday to July 15. Adults meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 23 to 24.

Young writers sought

The Soldotna Public Library is sponsoring a writing contest in conjunction with its summer reading program "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds." Children ages 7 to 18 are encouraged to participate. A T-shirt will be awarded to a winner from three age categories.

Singers wanted

Singers are needed to perform the national anthem at Oilers baseball games this summer. Anyone interested can contact Ron Lucia, general manager, at or 283-7133.

Art workshops offered

The Across the Bay Tent and Breakfast Adventure Company near Seldovia will hold various art workshops throughout the summer. Alaska Author Bill Sherwonit will teach an adventure travel writing workshop from July 29 to 31. The cost is $295, plus tax.

Artist and sculptor Katherine Coons will help artists of all levels express their experiences and surroundings through contemporary painting in a "conceptual landscape painting" workshop from Aug. 12 to 14. The cost is $265, plus tax.

Mushroom expert Chris Riggio will help students identify the species, macroscopic features and habitats of wild Alaska mushrooms, along with giving cooking tips, from Aug. 26 to 28. The cost is $280, plus tax.

Arts, humanities awards seeking nominations

Nominations are being solicited for the 2005 Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities. Nomination forms for the arts awards are available on the Web at aksca and from the Alaska State Council on the Arts at (888) 278-7424.

The deadline is Aug. 1. Awards will be presented by the governor and first lady Oct. 21 at a dinner ceremony in Fairbanks at the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

Art scholarship contest announced is accepting entries through Aug. 15 for its scholarship contest. Entries will be judged by a panel of art professionals. The contest winner will receive a $500 scholarship; second place will receive $300; and third will receive $200.

All entries must be displayed on to be considered for the contest. The contest is open to any student enrolled in an accredited university in the United States and is limited to one entry per artist.

Winners will be announced on Aug. 31 on the Web site.

Editors Day scheduled in September

The second Editors Day, a chance for children's book writers to consult with professional editors, will be held Sept. 10 in Anchorage. Preregistration is required.

Editors Abigail Samoun of Tricycle Press and Liz Waniewski of Dial Books for Young Readers will work with participants.
