Fires no longer wild

Rain continued to fall on the remnants of two peninsula wildfires Friday, and firefighters no longer needed continued to be released throughout the weekend.

About 170 firefighters were assigned to the Mystery Hills fire west of Cooper Landing, but all were released Saturday. The fire burned a total of 750 acres.

The Kenai Lake fire has 162 people assigned as of Saturday. Crews are continuing to mop up and restore control lines. Total size of the burn is 3,260 acres.

Currently, 20 fires are reported active in Alaska. Three fires are staffed and the others are being monitored. So far this year, 306 fires statewide have burned more than 213,000 acres.
