Join the fun of the Unity Run

Posted: Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Once again the Soldotna, Kenai, and Kenai River Rotary Clubs have joined forces to organize and promote the running of the 6th Annual Unity Run from Kenai to Soldotna Saturday, July 18th. The event utilizes the scenic and popular Unity Trail for the 10 mile and 5K competition or frolic. The charity run has drawn runners from all over Alaska as well as the lower 48. Honeymooners from Massachusetts one year even planned their wedding so they could make the symbolic run after taking their vows. The race draws all levels and ages of runners who join together for a great outdoor family time as well as contributing towards the goal of philanthropic projects of the local Rotary Clubs. Inspired and started six years ago by Soldotna Rotarian Steve Stenga along with his wife and marathon running partner Mary, participation in the run has grown every year. "We're expecting even a greater turn out this year with all the beautiful weather we've been having," said George Jedlicka, Unity Run coordinator.

Since its inception the purpose of the run has been to raise funds for Rotary projects while having fun and most importantly celebrating the unity which is a hallmark of the twin cities and Kenai River communities. According to event organizers all participants will receive a 2009 Unity Run T-shirt, a delicious barbeque following the run and a chance to win other prizes and bragging rights to go along with the medals and awards for the winners. "The run also gives local businesses a chance to show their support by sponsoring the event and having their logo appear on the popular Unity Run T-shirt. The effort of all Rotarians as well as community volunteers, runners and sponsors make the run not only a fun sport but a show of a unified community, it's a great family and competitive event," said Mike Sweeney, sponsorship chairman.

Water stations will be located along the 10 mile and 5K course to supply runners with drinks and encouragement. At the finish line, medals and awards await the winners rewarding their efforts. The event begins promptly at 9:00am with registration at Soldotna High School; runners will be transported by bus to the appropriate starting line with the officially timed finish line also at SoHi.
