Area students receive honors
Julian Wells of Kenai was named to the dean's list for the spring semester 2001 at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. To be named to the honor roll, a student must attain at least a 3.6 grade point average while carrying 12 or more graded credits.
Alison Reemtsma of Kenai was named to the dean's list for the 2001 spring quarter at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio.
She is the daughter of Phil and Eileen Reemtsma of Kenai.
Jennifer Marie Garnett of Soldotna was named to the spring semester 2001 president's list at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. To be named to the list, students must earn a 3.7 or better grade point average.
Teen travels to forum
Lela Wiley of Clam Gulch recently attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston. The 10-day forum is a career development program for high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine. Wiley joined 350 other students from around the country.
During the forum, Wiley was introduced to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice, including site visits to medical facilities and clinics. Students were faced with Problem Based Learning, an educational method familiar to most students in medical school, where they are presented a set of patient symptoms and must come to a diagnosis and prognosis for the symptoms.
Soldotna woman receives award
Kathy Thornton was awarded the director's award from the King Salmon Hotel in Soldotna. The award recognizes Best Western International Hotels with a cleanliness and maintenance inspection score of 950 points or more out of a possible 1,000. Hotels also must meet Best Western requirements for design and high customer service scores to qualify for the distinction.
She has been employed with the hotel since 1985.
Kenai man chosen to lead Elks
David W. Charlesworth of the Kenai Elks Lodge No. 2425 was recently installed as new leader of the West District of the Alaska State Elks Association at the Order's 137th annual Grand Lodge Convention in Philadelphia.
As the Elks national representative for the area, Charlesworth will now be responsible for working with local Elks lodges to fulfill the Order's commitment to promote charity and patriotism in their communities. In the position of District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Charlesworth will play a vital role in the workings of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks with duties including the advising of lodges on important internal and business matters, in the coordination and supervision of Elks' activities on many levels.
CPGH announces employee certification
Central Peninsula General Hospital dietitian Sharon Wright, MS, RD, LD, CDE, recently achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status. She completed the certification Examination for Diabetes Educators in June. Candidates must meet rigorous education and professional standards to be eligible to take the examination. Achieving the CDE credential demonstrates to patients and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality care for patients with diabetes.
Boy Scouts recognize contributions
Cindy Kircher of Soldotna received the District Award of Merit, the highest honor given by the organization, for her contributions made to scouting in the past year on the Kenai Peninsula.
