Arlin B. 'A.B.' Combs

Homer resident Arlin B. "A.B." Combs died Friday, June 21, 2002, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. He was 67.

A potluck will be held Saturday, July 13, at his home starting at 4 p.m. His ashes will be scattered at "Moose Camp" outside of Homer.

Mr. Combs was born Jan. 3, 1935, in Walla Walla, Wash. He joined the Navy when he was 17, serving during the Korean War. He earned his GED while he was in the Navy.

He moved to Alaska in the early 1960s and designed and built his home in Anchorage, where he lived until 1993 when he retired and moved with his wife, Dodie, to Homer. He designed and built another home on property they owned on East End Road.

Mr. Combs worked all over Alaska and the Pacific Northwest in the carpentry and construction industry. He was superintendent of Davis Construction for many years. He also worked for other companies over the years.

He was a member of the Shriners, Elks, VFW, Masons and American Legion. He also supported Ducks Unlimited and the NRA by volunteering his time and money for many events. Mr. Combs was a past potentate of the Shriners in Anchorage and past commander of the American Legion Post No. 16 in Homer.

Mr. Combs' enjoyed getting away every fall with his buddies at "Moose Camp." He also enjoyed tending to his greenhouse and apple trees. He made special rocking horses for family and friends along with various carpentry projects both big and little. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, clam digging, camping and being with friends and family.

"A.B. was a friend to many and made friends easily and was always ready with a good joke. He was generous to a fault, either giving away or sharing anything he had, be it fish and game or prized possessions. A.B. lived life to the fullest but left us too soon. We'll always remember him by the words, "NO, DUMMY!" his family said.

Mr. Combs was preceded in death by a son, Chris; stepfather, Al; and brother, Scott.

He is survived by his wife, Henrietta "Dodie" Combs of Homer; daughter, Kelly; granddaughter, Kristian of Washington state; stepdaughters, Tinker of Chignik Lagoon, Susie of Palmer, Kristy of Kodiak and Sharilyn of Soldotna; stepson, Hans of Homer; step-grandchildren, Delissa, Johnny, Jerod and Shanda of Chignik Lagoon, C.J., Danny and Sierra of Palmer, Brittney and Bobby of Kodiak and Hans III of Homer; mother, Rosa Shelton of Oregon; sister, Suzanne of Washington; brothers, Craig of Oregon and Rod of Palmer; sister, Deborah of Oregon; and many friends in Alaska and Washington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Henrietta Combs, P.O. Box 458, Homer, AK 99603.
