KODIAK (AP) Three construction workers demolishing a wall at the Coast Guard base Tuesday were hospitalized after coming into contact with an unidentified hazardous material.
Coast Guard spokeswoman Marsha Delaney said the three were taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center. All were nauseous or suffering from eye and throat irritation, Delaney said.
Sometime around 10:30 a.m., workers were demolishing remains of a concrete wall in a hangar when a powdery substance from inside the wall made contact with water and flashed.
Coast Guard Fire and Rescue and the military police responded to the incident. The workers remained conscious as they were transported.
A team with a mobile laboratory from the 103rd Civil Response Unit at Fort Richardson was to enter the construction area in protective gear to collect samples of the substance.
The team will analyze and identify the substance.
Construction work was halted.
