The Alaska Division of Forestry lifted the burn suspension for the Kenai-Kodiak area Thursday evening. The cities of Kenai, Homer, and Seward are also allowing permitted burning.
All permittees must call the phone number listed on their permit each day prior to burning to check on open burning status and log their controlled burn. Nikiski residents must also call the fire department before burning.
All burns must have a firebreak encircling the fire and water on site for control and extinguishment. Burn barrels that are set up to approved standards are allowed, except in the city of Kenai. Fires should never be left unattended, and always be thoroughly extinguished, rather than allowed to smolder.
Homeowners are encouraged to clear flammable materials within 100 feet of structures and enclose openings to prevent the entry of blowing embers should a wildfire threaten their property.
To obtain permitted burning information call the Division of Forestry office or visit their Web site at: http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/forestry/burn.
