Kenai Golf Report: Holiday weekend is over, let's play some golf

Posted: Wednesday, July 09, 2008

The Kenai Cup action continued on July 2 with the Kahuna's team of Gordon Griffin and Cliff Baker winning their match by a forfeit of the Atigun, Inc. team of Jack Focose and Gene Diamond. The Back Page team (Daryl Palmer and Tom Parker, substitute) carded a sound victory over the G-Men (Jerry Norris/Gary Katsion). The Grey Beards team of Pat Bowen/Greg Anderson narrowly defeated the Eldon and Ryan Harvey team, better known as H&H. Two Duffers (Jack Evans/Bruce Galloway) vanquished the Space Cadets team of Kirk Hyman/Jeff Johns and the The Eagles (Noel Widmayer/Tom Allison) had a bye. The season standings are now the Two Duffers (Jack Evans/Bruce Galloway) in first place, followed by the Back Page team (Greg Harrington/Daryl Palmer) in second and the Space Cadets (Kirk Hyman/Jeff Johns) in third. With only a two-point spread between the first and third place teams, anything can, and probably will, happen, so be sure to stay tuned for the next round.

The weather could not keep our hardy Alaskan ladies off the course. Judy Salo shot low gross with 51, Denise Cox had the closest to the pin, Marianne Hyman had the fewest putts and Trena Richardson won the mystery hole. Not to be outdone, the men came to play golf and feast on jambalaya provided by Ron Goecke. The first-place team of Dan Young, Terry Linebarger and Cliff Smith were followed by the second-place team of Cliff Baker, Jeff Gillman and Keith Stasek. John Davis was closest to the pin on No. 10 with a distance of 20 feet, 3 inches and Rudy Zoborowski was closest to the pin with 14 feet on No. 14. Paul Zimmerman had the long drive of the evening.

The Firefighter's Tournament was held on Saturday, July 5. The first-place team of Tommy Carver, Gordon Griffin, Eldon Harvey and Doug Jung should come as no surprise, coming in at 9-under. Honestly, guys it's a good thing you weren't playing poker, someone might have got shot! The second place-team with a 6-under was Rich "Re-rate" Edwards, Randy "Sgt. Leisure" Kornfield, Tom "Newby" Reese and Joe "No-Go" Deveaux. And finally, the third-place team with a 5-under was Bob Sizemore, Todd Eskelin, Jesse Wade and Jim Bradford. The third-place spot was actually a tie between two teams, but decided by carding back to determine the third place position. Losing third place by a card-off was the team of Rod Peterkin, Mark Gillies, Mike Brown and Brandon West. The men's long drive on No. 4 went to Truckee Lemay, while Jean Frost won for the women. Closest to the pin on No. 5 was Joe Deveaux; on No. 9, Greg Harrington; on No. 10, Jim Bradford; and on No. 14, Doug Jung.

There is still lots of tournament activity to be had this month with The Alliance on Saturday and the KGA Monthly Event on Sunday. The 2008 KGA Donald Morgan Memorial Championship will be held on July 19-20, the Junior Golf Tournament on July 24, the Walker Cup on July 24-25 and July 27 (in which the KGA defends their title), and the United Way on July 26. Please contact the pro shop at 283-7500 for more information or stop by and sign up for one of these great events. Have a great week and happy golfing. See you on the course!
