Longtime Soldotna resident Janett C. Garrett died Friday, July 2, 2010 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. She was 73.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at The Kenai City Cemetery in Kenai. A gathering/fellowship followed the graveside services at the Soldotna Church of Christ, 41896 Sterling Highway (Mile 91.7) in Soldotna. Pallbearers were Dave Johnson, Derek Johnson, Bobby Garrett, D'Angelo Cloud, Colton Lipps and Steve Foster.
Mrs. Garrett was born June 22, 1937 in Blue Ball, Arkansas. She graduated high school in Arkansas.
She married Robert Garrett Sr. on May 1, 1968 in San Francisco. The family moved to Alaska, living in Soldotna, in 1983. She and her daughter opened a small gift shop called Sent'Sations, which featured hand crafted bath items, personal products, handmade craft items and gifts. Mrs. Garrett was a member of the Soldotna Church of Christ. She loved church, her family, gardening, crafts, outdoor activities, and enjoyed the Alaska wilderness.
Her family wrote, "She enjoyed her home and her family and she cherished her brothers and sisters in Christ. She took great joy spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as any children who were around her at anytime. With her husband, she spent many hours outdoors, hunting, fishing, gold panning or just enjoying the beautiful Alaska scenery. She was always ready to listen or lend a hand to family and friends. She will be surly and truly missed."
Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her mother Tina Kitchens; daughter, Rebecca Jean Sanchez; and her brother Tom Webb.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Garrett Sr.; daughters, Christina Brooks Johnson of Kenai and Larenda Variz Shumate of Montesano, Wash.; son, Robert C. "Bobby" Garrett Jr. and his wife, Tanya, of Wasilla; grandchildren, Shannon Shaw of California, Deanna Johnson of Kenai, Derek Johnson of Sterling, Shayla Garrett and Cale Garrett of Wasilla, John Shumate Jr. of Aberdeen, Wash., Tammy Gullett of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Cassandra O'Mara of California, Janessa Shumate of Aberdeen, and Mirinda McGloulin of Montesano; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in memory of Janett to the Zambia Africa Medical Mission, P.O. Box 975 Soldotna, Alaska 99669.
