ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Keepers at the Alaska Zoo made a surprising discovery about a new coyote pup they believed to be a male. They discovered Archie is actually a she.
Archie arrived in Anchorage in June with paperwork from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game that labeled it a male. Nobody at the zoo checked.
''We all thought that somebody else looked,'' said zoo curator Pat Lampi. ''Somebody happened to be playing with Archie and had her roll over on her back and noticed the parts didn't match up.''
It happens sometimes, especially with younger animals, he said. The pup will keep its name, however. ''Miss Archie now,'' Lampi said.
