ANCHORAGE (AP) A 4-year-old Barrow boy died after he was struck by a pickup truck driven by his grandfather, North Slope Borough police said Thursday.

Several children were playing on a driveway Wednesday afternoon just before the accident occurred. After the children were cleared out of the way, Eugene Brower backed his boat into the driveway with his truck, police said.

No one saw the boy, Andrew Brower, ride his bicycle in front of the truck as Eugene Brower, 55, unhitched the boat, police said. As the elder Brower drove away from the boat, the truck struck and ran over Andrew.

Eugene Brower, president of the Barrow Whaling Captains' Association, immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Andrew. The boy was taken to Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m., Lt. Kelly Alzaharna said.

Alzaharna said Brower was the boy's biological grandfather, but had adopted the boy.
