ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Federal Subsistence Board has adopted emergency regulations because of very small king salmon returns to the Kuskokwim River drainage.
The board on Monday restricted the bag limit to one king a day when using rod and reel. It also limited gillnet mesh size to six inches or smaller.
The 60-day emergency regulations pertain to federal waters, and are similar to an action taken over the weekend by the state Fish and Game department.
State and federal fisheries managers are concerned that too few Kuskokwim kings will make the trip upstream to spawn. This is the second straight year of extremely low king salmon returns for the Kuskokwim.
