FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A Fairbanks man died after jumping off a motel's third-floor balcony early Wednesday morning.

Fairbanks Police Lt. Dusty Johnson said Andrew J. Delia, 40, climbed up on the Alaska Motel banister and told his friends on the ground he'd be right down. While they headed up the stairs to meet him, Delia apparently leaped off the balcony, Johnson said.

''I think he had been drinking enough to where it was an error in judgment,'' Johnson said. ''There is no reason to believe there was any foul play. We honestly believe that the person didn't realize what he was doing.''

Delia suffered a head injury. Police called by Delia's friends found him lying face down on the parking lot pavement at about 4:40 a.m. Police said he wasn't breathing and had a faint pulse.

An ambulance rushed Delia to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
