Soldotna softball team wins district

The Soldotna Senior Fast Pitch Team won the Senior League Alaska District 1 Championship Sunday at Hayes Field in Soldotna by defeating the Kenai Senior Fast Pitch Team 4-1.

Soldotna scored three runs in the first inning and that would be all pitcher Vanessa Cleveland needed. She struck out eight and didn't allow a run until the seventh inning.

The tournament was double elimination. On Friday, Soldotna also played Kenai after Kenai had defeated the tournament's other team, Polar Little League from Anchorage, on Thursday.

Soldotna won that game 7-0, with Cleveland pitching all seven innings and striking out nine. Coaches Neldon Gardner and Dave Cleveland said the offense was a total team effort in the game.

Kenai defeated Polar Little League again Saturday to make it to the championship game.

The Soldotna squad moves on to play in the state tournament in Juneau later in July.

Twins sweep West

The American Legion Twins swept West Sunday in Anchorage by scores of 5-3 and 16-1.

In the first game, Jeff Kennedy picked up the win and Erich Simpson notched the save. The defense committed just one error.

Justin Simpson was 3-for-5 with a run, Jacob Madrid was 2-for-5 with a run and Luke Gilbert was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

"We struggled a little bit, but as the game wore on, we got better," said Twins manager John Kennedy, whose team is now 19-7.

In the second game, West ran out of pitching and the Twins were able to score 16 runs on just eight hits.

Steve Mabeus pitched all six innings for the win.

The Twins travel to Fairbanks to face the 49ers in a single game today, a doubleheader Wednesday and a single game Thursday.
