In the small congregation of Star of the North Lutheran, four high school youth have had their hopes become reality.
Three years ago, the youth program began with eight teen-agers and an adult leader. The National Youth Gathering in New Orleans 2001 united them and gave them a goal.
However, two years later, only four teens, Jessica Deardoff, Jessie Perkovich, Mike Vasilie and Sondra Mize remained to keep the hope alive.
A prayer to God that they would make it filled their hearts as they looked to each other and God to help get them to Louisiana. The youth organized a semi-formal dinner, two garage sales and a service auction, each event being exceedingly profitable. They also found it important to serve their supportive congregation and community.
In the fall, the teens put on an annual fall festival, open to the public, and delivered jack-o-lanterns to senior citizens. Other opportunities for service included a spaghetti dinner for the members of the congregation and volunteering for the ABC Crisis Pregnancy Center.
The teens reached their goal in June of 2001 and leave next week to attend the Cross Cultural Gathering prior to the National Youth Gathering of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod both in New Orleans.
