Ninilchik center offers square dancing

Square dancing is available at the Ninilchik Senior Center, 66265 Aspen Ave., near the post office, at 7 p.m. Thursdays. A caller-instructor will be on hand, and dress is casual. For more information, call (907) 567-1004 or 252-6420.

Landscaping contests begin

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the "Beautiful Business" and "Yard of the Week" contests. Each week from Friday through Aug. 6, the beautification committee will choose a Soldotna business and residence to highlight. Winners will display a sign proclaiming them either the Beautiful Business of the Week or Yard of the Week. Winners will be announced at the weekly Soldotna chamber luncheon. Winning businesses receive $25 gift certificates from Kenai River Nursery. To nominate a business or individual, call, e-mail or fax the nominee's name, phone number and location to the chamber at 262-9814.

Girls basketball camp deadline Friday

The Boys and Girls Club is sponsoring Gym Rats basketball camp Aug. 2 to 4 for girls in grades three through 12. The registration deadline is Friday. The fee is $75, and participants must be members of the Boys and Girls Club. Molly Tuter will instruct. For more information and a complete list of playing times, call 283-2682.

Driver safety class planned

The American Association of Retired Persons will sponsor a driver safety class from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center. The eight-hour class is certified by the state of Alaska. The class is open to all ages. The cost is $10 for materials. For more information, call Vivian Swanson at 260-3966.

Funny River Festival slated

The Funny River Festival will be held July 30 and Aug. 1. Scheduled events are a cribbage and Nickels tournament at 6 p.m. July 30; and a pancake breakfast at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 followed by a quilt raffle at 1 p.m. For more information, call Ray Price at 262-6161.

Seniors plan salmon classic

The Sterling Senior Center is sponsoring its annual Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Count Classic, in which entrants guess the number of sockeye salmon that will cross the Alaska Department of Fish and Game counter as of noon Aug. 7. Tickets are $2, and prizes will be awarded for the three closest guesses. The deadline for entry is July 30, and winners will be announced Aug. 28.

Safe sitter course offered

The Boys and Girls Club in Kenai will hold two safe sitter classes Aug. 9 through 13. Class topics cover basic child care and safety, as well as ways to entertain children safely. Participants must between the ages of 11 and 13 and current summer members of the club. Summer membership is $125 per month, per child. The safe sitter class is an additional $50.
