Longtime Kenai resident Mary Ellen Emerson died Friday, July 2, 2010 from respiratory failure at her home in Kenai. She was 60.
A remembrance of Ms. Emerson's life will be held at a later date.
Ms. Emerson was born Sept. 28, 1949 to Joseph and Viola (Bangs) Emerson in Clayton, New Mexico. She moved to Kenai in 1975 where she worked for Guardian Security at Tesoro until the late 1980s. In 2007 she began working as a personal care giver for Consumer Direct in Kenai. Ms. Emerson enjoyed plants, video games, helping people in need and was a collector of all things.
Her favorite quote was, "Faith is not believing that God can, it's knowing that he will."
"Mary is the biggest hearted person any of us knew. She would give you the shirt off her back and welcome all of us with open arms and heart. She was a fighter and taught us all to never give up. Mary lived her life by her favorite quote, while battling cancer. In the end she won, the hearts and friendship of us all. She was loved thoroughly," wrote her family.
Ms. Emerson was preceded in death by her father, Joseph M. Emerson. She is survived by her mother, Viola Bangs of Ulysses, Kansas; sister, Peggy Peden of Ulysses; and her companion Greg Getty of Kenai; nephew, Nicholas Wirz of North Kenai; and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends too numerous to mention.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary's memory to the Central Peninsula Hospital Oncology Department, 250 Hospital Place, Soldotna, AK 99669.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
