Oilers offense pounds Glacier Pilots

Posted: Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Tuesday's Alaska Baseball League contest between the Peninsula Oilers and Anchorage Glacier Pilots started off with a bang -- literally.

Peninsula's Tyler Grimes took the first pitch from Pilots starter Paul Montalbano and crushed it over the left-field wall for a solo home run. Grimes' homer proved to be an offensive omen as the Oilers cruised to a 15-7 victory at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. Peninsula improves to 20-11 in the ABL while the Pilots fall to 8-22. The same two face off tonight at 7 p.m.

As of late Tuesday, the Oilers were still 2 1-2 games behind the Goldpanners in the ABL. The Goldpanners won the first game of a doubleheader against the Anchorage Bucs. The second game was still in progress as the Clarion went to press.

Eight different players scored runs for the Oilers and nine recorded at least one hit. Nathan Theunissen and Stephen Piscotty led with four RBIs each. Piscotty, Grimes and Ryan Gebhart each had multihit games.

The biggest inning came in the bottom of the eighth for the Oilers. They racked up six runs, four of which came on Theunissen's grand slam. "I was seeing the ball really well," Theunissen said after the game on 1140 AM. "My swing feels really good right now. I got an opportunity and took it."

The teams traded the lead five times in the first three innings.

Both starting pitchers lasted just eight outs. Peninsula's Geoff Broussard gave up five hits and six runs -- all earned -- before being replaced by Taylor Garrison. Montalbano yielded two hits, five runs -- three earned -- four walks and hit two batters.

The Pilots answered the Oilers' four-run second inning with four runs of their own. Two runs scored when O'Koyea Dickson, who went 3-for-4, hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the top of the third. Trent Garrison -- Taylor's twin brother -- ripped a two-out, two-RBI double to give the Pilots a 6-5 lead.

Peninsula regained the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Gebhart drove in two runs with a single with the bases juiced. Piscotty followed with an RBI single to give the Oilers an 8-6 lead.

Ryan Hege added to the Oilers' lead with an RBI in the sixth inning. Dickson answered with an RBI single in the seventh.

Despite recording just one hit, the Oilers sent nine batters to plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Two straight walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Grimes. He ripped an RBI single to score Mike Miller. Gebhart then drew a walk to score Justin Charles. Sean Madigan and Grimes were brought home on an error to give Peninsula a 5-2 lead.

Three consecutive Pilots hits to start the second inning tied the game at 1. Cullen Manship then hit into a double play with runners on the corners. Clay Cederquist scored on the play to give Anchorage a 2-1 lead.
