Bucs, Francis blank Oilers

Posted: Sunday, July 15, 2001

Pitcher Chris Reilly allowed one run over the course of eight innings of work for the Peninsula Oilers, but Anchorage Bucs pitcher was one better, beating the Oilers 1-0 in Alaska Baseball League action at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage Saturday.

Reilly scattered five hits and struck out nine batters without issuing a walk, but the Peninsula offense managed just two hits against Francis.

Francis struck out seven and walked two in nine innings of work for the complete-game win.

With the loss, the Oilers fall to 9-13 in the ABL and 16-17 overall.

In Saturday's other ABL game, the first-place Anchorage Glacier Pilots were tied with the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks 4-4 after 11 innings of play at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

The Oilers are 6 1-2 games out of first place in the ABL and 4 1-2 games behind the idle second-place Mat-Su Miners.

The top two teams from the ABL qualify for the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., at the end of the summer season.

The Oilers visit the Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer today at 2 p.m. to face the Miners (1140 KSLD) before returning to Mulcahy Stadium for three games with the Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers' next home game is slated for Thursday when the team begins a four-game series against Athletes in Action at Coral Seymour Memorial Park, located in Kenai.
